The movie has the worst rating on Rotten Tomatoes of any movie in the MCU
Marvel's
Eternals is officially the worst film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), with a number of critics giving the film a negative review.
Whilst some have praised the movie for offering something different to the other instalments in the MCU, it seems that many are not a fan of the latest film.
Despite starting with a decent standing on review site Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has gradually slipped down the rankings.
Eternals, which features huge names in its cast such as Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kit Harington, Salma Hayek and Gemma Chan, currently has a rating of 61 per cent
on the site.
This is five points lower than the previous worst Marvel film,
Thor: The Dark World.
The critical consensus on Rotten Tomatoes states: "An ambitious superhero epic that soars more often than it strains,
Eternals takes the MCU in intriguing - and occasionally confounding - new directions.
"
Obviously this is still an above average score - and it's not all bad. Many have praised director Chloé Zhao for doing something different with the movie instead of the pretty formulaic plots of some of the other films in the MCU.
Some have highlighted that the film is very plot-driven and focuses largely on character origin and development instead of big action sequences.
Leah Greenblatt from
Entertainment Weekly praised Zhao's direction and the film for its "steady thrum of melancholy and its deeper, odder character arcs."
But although action sequences still exist in the film, there appears to be a lot of detail about superhero origins and legends. In short, it seems at over two and half hours long, it just got a bit boring for many.
Rolling Stone's
K. Austin Collins said: "
Eternals is so busy showing off what it can do, where it can go, that it bypasses and overlooks what it really has to offer. There are real dilemmas, real battles of interest buried beneath the soft-pedaled, naturally-lit, cozy surfaces of this movie."
Nate Adams from
The Only Critic described the movie as "convoluted" and one of the "biggest misfires since the Marvel Cinematic Universe began."
And
Vanity Fair's Cassie Da Costa wrote that "From visuals to music choice, there's a lack of style here that is only further emphasized by the film's refusal to focus."
It doesn't seem that the
Eternals will be the next Avengers, then.
