The universe is expanding

Series two of the hit Netflix show Squid Game is still a couple of months away.

However, the good news for fans of the show is that the universe could be about to expand as sources have revealed to Deadline that a new English-language Squid Game is in the works.

It has been reported that Fight Club director David Fincher is coming on to develop the new series.

Rumours have been growing for several months about what Fincher is working on next and it seems that the Squid Game series is likely the project Fincher commits his time to in 2025.

Though it is not the first universe extension for the Netflix blockbuster, it would mark the first Squid Game scripted series offshoot.

Meanwhile, the unscripted series Squid Game: The Challenge has been renewed for a second season and there is also the video game franchise.

Netflix has yet to give comment on the claims.

The original Korean-language Squid Game is a thriller that involves dark themes and tones that are seen throughout Fincher’s past works.

It is also similar to his 1997 thriller The Game, starring Michael Douglas and Sean Penn, which revolves around real-life people becoming unwitting participants in a diabolical game.

The director is one of the streaming giants top talents. He helped the then-fledgling streamer jump into the world of original content with the drama series House of Cards.

He was also behind Netflix’s cult crime thriller series Mindhunter, and he executive produced its Emmy-winning animated series Love, Death and Robots.

Fincher, who has had a deal with Netflix for some time, had previously been linked to doing something in the Squid Game universe — including a potential English-language movie.

However, the rumours suggest it is a series and not a full-length movie.

Dennis Kelly is believed to be writing the script and it will be likely set in the US.

Squid Game was a massive breakout in 2021 and is still ranked as the streamer’s most popular series. It won six Primetime Emmys.
