Now we have more questions

*Mild spoilers ahead*

Fans of Netflix’s Stranger Things think its showrunners have confirmed Will Byers’ sexuality after he gave an impassioned speech to friend and potential love interest Mike Wheeler.

The sexuality of Will, played by Noah Schnapp, has been kept fairly vague until the recent instalment of Stranger Things, with seven episodes in June and two feature film-length episodes released in July.

In one scene in particular, Will is in the back of a pizza truck with Mike, played by Finn Wolfhard.

The two are discussing the various trials that lay ahead while looking to locate a top-secret location housing Eleven, played by Millie Bobby Brown.

Mike worries that Eleven doesn’t need him anymore, at which point Will whacks out a painting that depicts Mike as the “leader.” The painting had been hinted at in previous episodes but what came next had fans waving their rainbow flags for days.

With Mike still in his feelings, a teary-eyed Will exclaimed: “When you’re different, sometimes you feel like a mistake. But you make her feel like she’s not a mistake at all. Like she’s better for being different and that gives her the courage to fight on.”

There was no grand coming-out moment – but one step at a time, we guess?

While a lot of fans rejoiced at the moment, given that the only other queer character is Robin, there were others who saw it as “queerbaiting.” However with one season left to go, perhaps the creators are merely taking their time?

As one fan explained: “Will byers has been abused and made fun of for being gay for so long to just have him say he feels like a mistake but mike is the one that doesn’t make him feel like one but mike doesn’t realise and goes on to look at the map to find el???? WHAT’S FAIR IN THAT.”

In contrast, another wrote: “Not Even. a Coming Out Scene. NOT EVEN. SOMEONE SAYING THE WORD GAY. NOT EVEN. WILL BYERS BEING FUCKING HAPPY FOR ONCE. HOLY SHIT IM GOING TO GO RABID.”
