After years and years of rumours and legal wrangling, a second sequel to the Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure is finally, finally on its way.

The 1989 classic starred Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter as the titular teenage duo, who are given a time travelling phone box in order to help pass their history class. And then the (even better) sequel, 1991’s Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, they were killed and had to escape from the afterlife.

Reeves went on to be a massive star, making classics like Speed, Point Break, The Matrix and John Wick. Alex Winter didn’t become as big, but he has directed some interesting films, including 2012’s Downloaded about the history of Napster and file sharing. But for over 25 years, fans have clamoured for another sequel. Last month, Reeves and Winter reunited for an Entertainment Weekly interview, in which they hinted that part 3 was very close to happening.

Now it has finally been confirmed. Bill & Ted Face The Music is currently in pre-production, according to Deadline, with both Reeves and Winter returning. Dean Parisot, who made the comedy classic Galaxy Quest, will be directing.

The third instalment will not be set in the future shown in the previous films – Bill and Ted are now world famous musicians – instead they are just middle aged guys with family, whjo are still terrible at music. A mysterious threat will cause then to go on another time travel adventure to save the universe, this time joined by “their daughters, a new crop of historical figures, and some sympathetic music legends”.

A joint statement from Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves went:

“We couldn’t be more excited to get the whole band back together again. Chris and Ed wrote an amazing script, and with Dean at the helm we’ve got a dream team!”
