The worst Marvel movie is reportedly getting a sequel

Charlie Herbert

The first film has the worst Rotten Tomatoes of any MCU movie

A sequel is reportedly in the works for Marvel’s Eternals, despite the film being the worst-received in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Although the film features an all-star cast including Angelina Jolie, Kit Harington, Gemma Chan and Richard Madden, it got a very average reception from critics, and currently has a score of just 47 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

However the audience score sits significantly higher at 78 percent, and some praised the 2021 release for offering something different to most of the other films in the MCU.

It seems that Marvel Studios clearly think there is enough promise from the original to warrant a sequel.

According to the Tales from the Mod Queue thread on Reddit, Eternals 2 is “on track,” although no further details about production or a timeline for the film’s release were provided.

The thread says that it gets its information from several “non-verified, but trusted sources” that have been “proved legit over time.”

Although Marvel and Disney seem to have faith in an Eternals sequel, it sounds like they have been left stung by the first film.

Eternals apparently had a number of production issues that made it a “harder task than the average Marvel movie” and the studio is understandably keen to avoid those this time.

And despite the praise from some for the different direction the film went in, it doesn’t sound like studio bosses have much faith in director Chloé Zhao, with rumours suggesting that she will not be asked to return to direct the sequel and that, if she does direct the sequel, she will be “heavily restricted.”

There had been some speculation among fans that Marvel had been trying to quietly erase Eternals from its universe after the film’s poor reception, with the events of the movie barely mentioned or alluded to in any other Marvel production since its release.

But these rumours would suggest otherwise. Either way, Marvel fans are probably more preoccupied at the moment by releases such Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Ms Marvel.
