Echo Valley, a tense and twisty new thriller movie from writer Brad Ingelsby (creator of Mare of Easttown), is streaming now via Apple TV+.
The film stars Oscar-winner Julianne Moore (Still Alice) as Kate, a recently widowed woman in southern Pennsylvania who is struggling with the costs of maintaining her farm.
Kate has been worried about her drug addicted daughter, Claire (Sydney Sweeney), with whom she is estranged.
So, at first, she is delighted when Claire unexpectedly shows up on her doorstep. It isn't long, however, before Claire asks for a loan of money, resulting in a fight and the daughter storming off.
However, when Claire returns a few nights later covered in someone else's blood, Kate decides to commit a shocking act in an effort to save her child.
Echo Valley is directed by Michael Pearce (2021's very underrated Encounter) and is produced by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Gladiator).
Its cast also includes a scene-stealing, scary Domhnall Gleeson (The Patient), alongside Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve) and Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks).
The movie has earned mixed reviews from critics, with some accusing its plot of growing more "melodramatic" and "unbelievable" as it continues.
However, we'd argue that there is a lot to like in Echo Valley, mainly the flawless performances (particularly Moore's) and Ingelsby's screenplay.
In terms of the script, the film manages to be a very suspenseful thriller with some jaw-dropping twists and turns, as well as a thought-provoking human drama about addiction and the lengths and limits of parental love.
It's the type of movie that will have viewers wondering what they would do if they were in the lead character's shoes, all the way up to its closing moments.

Daily Telegraph (UK): "Claire’s complex mother-daughter relationship with Kate – strained well beyond breaking point, yet still determinedly, impossibly unsnapped – is deftly handled by both actresses."
Financial Times: "I’ll take the side of the kind of film that is neither the nth instalment of a franchise, nor fishing for an Oscar, but simply seeks to entertain while also giving you something to chew on. Echo Valley supplies just that."
Mark Kermode: "A really gripping thriller."
The Times (UK): "Welcome back, American cinema for grown-ups, it’s been a while."
