Demi Moore’s ‘demented’ new film sparks worldwide cinema walkouts

Charlie Herbert

It’s not for the faint hearted

A new body horror film starring Demi Moore is so gruesome and disgusting that some have been walking out from screenings.

Moore has made her big-screen comeback in new film The Substance. It’s fair to say that this marks a bit of a change of genre for the actress, best known for her roles in Ghost, A Few Good Men and Indecent Proposal.

The Substance sees Moore play an ageing TV fitness star who is fired from her show on her 50th birthday. After she is involved in a car accident, she decides to use a serum that “generates a new, younger, more beautiful, more perfect” version of herself, played by Margaret Qualley.

However, this leads to some gruesome side effects and consequences.

You can watch the trailer below.

Without giving too much of the plot away, be warned: this is a full on bloody, grotesque, stomach-churning body horror.

But along with the gore, The Substance is also a biting satire commenting on modern-beauty standards, and has been a hit with critics, who have lauded it as an “ecstatically demented fairytale” and an “outrageously indulgent piece of gonzo body-horror comedy.”

It seems that for some, the graphic body horror was a bit too much though, with people walking out of screenings of The Substance.

Taking to X, one person wrote: “Went to see The Substance last night and we had to walk out for the last hour. Just too gory for me!”

Another said: “Never in my life seen so many people walk out of a theatre lmao.”

Meanwhile, someone else suggested cameras should be installed to capture people’s reactions to the films as it plays.

One person joked: “The Substance should have audience cams in every screening where you can take away a printed pic of your face on a keyring like they do on Disneyland rides lol.”

Someone else replied: “Saw it last night and it was incredible. Made just a little bit more enjoyable by some poor fella in the back that just could not handle it haha.”

And one fan told the MailOnline that “at least 20 people” walked out of their screening in Leicester Square.

The Substance is in cinemas now.
