Denzel Washington’s best sci-fi movie is on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

The film re-teamed the actor with the director of Man on Fire two years later.

Our TV movie pick for tonight (Thursday, 15 August) is Deja Vu, the best sci-fi movie to star Denzel Washington (Man on Fire).

The thriller is set in the wake of a bombing on a ferry carrying US Navy sailors and their families in New Orleans that leaves nearly 550 people dead.

As a result, the FBI (represented by Val Kilmer) invites ATF agent Doug Carlin (Washington) to join a new top-secret governmental unit seeking to capture the terrorist (Jim Caviezel) responsible.

“[The unit’s] amazing technology lets the team fold time four days backward and see the madman’s movements as he plots to kill a woman (Paula Patton) who could give him away,” the plot synopsis reads.

“Doug realises that the technology could allow him to do what law-enforcement officers dream of — go back in time to prevent the crime.”

Directed by the legendary Tony Scott (Man on Fire, Top Gun, True Romance), Deja Vu boasts a really inventive premise, terrifically muscular action set-pieces, great performances and an oddly emotional story.

In regards the latter, you basically witness Doug form a connection – through this top-secret programme – with Patton’s character who has already died, before then getting an unexpected chance to save her.

Deja Vu is airing on TV tonight on Film4 at 9pm. The sci-fi thriller is also streaming on Disney+.
