Captain America fans are NOT ready

Chris Evans has offered Marvel fans an ominous hint about what lies ahead for Captain America, revealing that Steve Rogers endures a “brutal” storyline in the hotly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday.

The actor, who returns as the star-spangled hero, gave the teaser during a Q&A at Fan Expo Boston over the weekend.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Doomsday unites a sprawling cast drawn from the legacy Avengers, the X-Men, the Thunderbolts and the Fantastic Four, all expected to face off against Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Evans explained that the directors relish putting his character through the wringer.

"The Russos love beating up Steve Rogers. Their favorite thing to do is to just beat the crap out of him. To them, that’s what makes a hero, and that’s someone who gets punched so many times but still gets up. So they keep finding new ways to kick his butt. And this one was brutal."

What Chris Evans’ return means for Doomsday

The tease adds to mounting anticipation for a film still several months from cinemas, arriving on the back of a bumper period for the studio that included Spider-Man: Brand New Day's record-breaking box office.

The Russos have said Downey surprised them with the voice he crafted for Doom, a detail they described as key to the masked villain. For now, Evans is keeping the specifics under wraps — but fans have been warned their hero is in for a battering.
