Brutal horror that’s ‘worse than The Human Centipede’ is leaving viewers traumatised

'This movie was way worse than The Human Centipede'

Featuring a mix of horrifying body modifications, f***ed up concepts about humans-to-animal transformation and a psychopathic surgeon, it's drawn comparisons to The Human Centipede - with some saying it's actually a more difficult watch than the infamous 2009 film.

Released in 2014 by A24 - the studio behind modern-day horror classics such as Hereditary, The Lighthouse and Midsommar - Tusk follows podcaster Wallace (Justin Long), who travels to interview recluse Howard, who has a morbid fascination with walruses after one saved him from a shipwreck.

The film caught the attention of horror fan Heidi Wong on TikTok, who labelled 'Tusk' the worst horror film she had ever watched.

Explaining the concept of 'Tusk', she said in one video: “Out of all the horror movies that I’ve seen, this one gets to me the most.

“Tusk is about a podcaster who meets a crazy man who wants to turn him into a walrus, as in surgically turn him from a human to a walrus.

“This movie was worse than The Human Centipede to me.”

In another video reflecting on the ending of the film, she said: “Me watching a guy who was forced to be surgically turned into a walrus finally escape, only for his friends to put him in a zoo to live the rest of his life as an actual walrus.”

People who had also seen the film were quick to share how traumatising they had also found it.

One person commented: “Please don’t remind me of the movie Tusk. I’m traumatized from watching it”.

Another said: “I dreamt about that damn walrus for weeks!”

Others shared that the film had permanently altered their perception of walruses, with one person writing: “After knowing about this movie and seeing clips I can never see walruses the same anymore.”

The film's director Kevin Smith has openly spoken in recent years about his desire to do a sequel, and last year Long said Smith had told him about his desire to do a Tusk 2.

Long told SlashFilm: "He [Smith] texted us all the other day, Haley [Joel Osment] and Genesis [Rodriguez], and he told us that he wanted to do it, and I thought it was a joke. And then I realized he was being serious. And then one of the [other] interviewers said, 'Yeah, he said the same to me.'"
