Bright will be Netflix’s biggest and most expensive cinematic outing so far, costing $90 million.
Judging by the trailer, it’s clear that all of the money is up there on the screen.
Directed by David Ayer (End of Watch, Fury, Suicide Squad) and written by Max Landis (Chronicle, American Ultra), it tells the story of two cops, one human (Will Smith) and one orc (Joel Edgerton), in a kind of alternative-universe version of Los Angeles, one where magic and wizards actually exist alongside humanity, albeit with more than a little bit of a racial issue going on between them.
When these two are forced to partner together – Edgerton’s orc is the first to ever join the otherwise all-human police force – they are soon thrown in the deep end of a very dangerous plot involving sinister wizards and a magic wand that is described as “a nuclear bomb that grants wishes”.
Harry Potter, it ain’t.
It is great to see Smith back to his foul-mouthed self from the likes of Bad Boys after playing it safe for so long, and Edgarton is always great in everything he’s in, including the likes of Black Mass, The Gift and Warrior.
Plus, there’s that supporting cast of Noomi Rapace (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo), Edgar Ramirez (The Girl On The Train), Jay Hernandez (Hostel) and Ike Barinholtz (Sisters), and all combined we are very excited to see what Netflix have managed to pull off with this one.
Bright arrives on the streaming service on Friday 22 December.
