A very fun new crime mystery series is now available to stream at home

Stephen Porzio

The show comes from the creator of Scrubs and Ted Lasso.

Bad Monkey, a new crime comedy mystery series starring Vince Vaughn, has just premiered on Apple TV+,

Based on the novel of the same name by Carl Hiaasen, the show sees Vaughn play Andrew Yancy – a detective for the Miami Police Department who finds himself in hot water with his employers after a video of an altercation between him and the wealthy husband of his lover (Michelle Monaghan, True Detective) goes viral.

Bounced to working as a health inspector in the Florida Keys, Yancy is determined to keep his head down and get his old job back.

That said, when a human arm is reeled out of the water by fishermen along the coast, the former detective becomes embroiled in the mystery of what happened – a mystery which also involves a young fisherman in the Bahamas (Ronald Peet, The I-Land).

Aiding Yancy in his quest is Rosa Campesino (Natalie Martinez, Broken City), a bored and curious medical examiner.

Hailing from Scrubs and Ted Lasso creator Bill Lawrence, Bad Monkey’s great cast also includes recognisable faces like Alex Moffat (The Bear), Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim), John Ortiz (Miami Vice), Rob Delaney (Catastrophe) and Zack Braff (Scrubs).

And having seen three episodes of the series, JOE can confirm it is a lot of fun.

While the first episode may be a tad overloaded with quirky elements, we’d advise people to stay with the show – which quickly settles into a groove thanks to the effortless charisma of a well-cast Vaughn, its easy on the eye Florida locations and the genuinely very intriguing mystery.

Holding a 93% Rotten Tomatoes score, you can read a sample of some of the other glowing reviews for Bad Monkey right here:

The Daily Beast: “A vehicle tailor-made for its leading funnyman Vince Vaughn—and one of the year’s sunniest surprises.”

Financial Times: “Bad Monkey finds its rhythm, relaxing into an entertaining yarn that makes the most of its sun-drenched setting and features oddball characters who stay just on the right side of zany.”

Rolling Stone: “Even allowing for the passage of years, Bad Monkey does as good a job of weaponizing Vaughn’s loquaciousness as any role he’s had since Wedding Crashers.”

TheWrap: “It all works best when it embraces the sun-drenched noir of detective questions, shady witnesses and the general aura of bad things around every corner.”

Bad Monkey’s first two episodes are available to stream now on Apple TV+. The rest of its 10 episode season will air weekly on Wednesdays.
