Yep, it's a sad day because Ray Meagher has announced that he will step down from his role as Alf Stewart in the beloved show.
The 74-year-old has been a stalwart from the very start, that's over 30 years ago, and he's leaving
Home and Away for a role in the upcoming tenth-anniversary celebration tour of
Priscilla Queen Of The Desert.
In an interview with Australian magazine
New Idea, he said: "It’s a privilege to have a job for 30 years and really enjoy it for that time."
Speaking about his new role in the musical, Meagher said that there's a little bit of Alf in his new character, the mechanic Bob. "I always think Bob is like Alf on Valium! He’s more of a laid-back character than Alf! I do have a couple of verses of a song solo, which are the most petrifying minutes of the show for me!"
The actor currently holds a Guinness World record for being the longest-serving actor in an Australian serial, and he left the door slightly open for a return by saying: "goodbye for now.'
