A new study shows that 47 per cent of Gen Z want to see less sex onscreen.
The study conducted by UCLA found that American viewers between the ages of 10 and 24 thought that sex ‘isn’t needed’ for most TV shows and films with 44 per cent feeling that romance is ‘overused’.
Meanwhile, 51 per cent of the 1500 people surveyed wanted to see more content about platonic relationships and friendships.
The study gave insight into what the younger generation want to see coming out of Hollywood.
Another surprising revelation was that 56 per cent of those surveyed preferred to watch original stories as opposed to franchises, adaptations and remakes, something they have in common with older viewers.
Psychology Today reports that rates of sexual activity have been in decline for years and that Gen Z are having sex less often and with fewer partners – it is especially true for men of this generation.
Gen Z are reporting a lower frequency of sex than people in their 30s and 40s.
The study comes after Jennifer Lawrence’s comedy ‘No Hard Feelings’ started streaming on Netflix with many calling her nude scene ‘unnecessary’.
The study also found that racial stereotypes were extremely disliked. Having a person of colour portraying a villain, or a character with negative traits was also frowned upon.
Their favourite storylines involved people ‘living lives like their own’ and they enjoyed watching ‘hopeful, uplifting’ stories about people ‘beating the odds’.
One worrying finding from the study found that Gen Z considers TikTok to be the most authentic media platform despite its search feature delivering much more misinformation that google for example.
