Will’s mum from The Inbetweeners still gets sent graphic messages from fans

‘TV’s fittest mum’ has received messages ‘so graphic I can’t repeat them’

The Inbetweeners star Belinda Stewart-Wilson has revealed she is still getting attention from fans and that her son gets teased for having “TV’s fittest mum” and refuses to watch the show.

The 51-year-old played Will Mackenzie’s (Simon Bird) mum Polly in all three series of the cult E4 sitcom, capturing the eye of viewers and the boys – Jay Cartwright (James Buckley), Simon Cooper (Joe Thomas) and Neil Sutherland (Blake Harrison) on the show.

But it seems some of the attention Belinda has received has gone a bit far, with some so explicit it would even make Jay blush.

She told the Daily Star: “I’ve had some odd messages and suggestions over the years some of which are so graphic I can’t repeat them. But you have to take it with a pinch of salt – it’s still nice to be loved.”

Despite the attention, Belinda says she loved playing Will’s mum: “I still get shouted at in the street and it’s great just being Will’s mum, forever in the hearts of the nation.”

Belinda’s son, 16-year-old Jackson, isn’t quite so happy about his mum being a fantasy figure, as he get’s “teased at school”.

“He swears he’ll never watch it,” Belinda explained.

“I think he’s chosen to avoid it because maybe he’s heard comments about me,” she said, before joking about her label as “TV’s fittest mum”.

“Well it’s quite good fun isn’t it, it means that my work has gone well if people are talking about a part that I’ve played. I never saw it coming, to be one of TV’s fittest mums, it’s a weird combination of things but I’m happy to accept the crown.

“I think Polly became infamous because of the way the boys talked about her. Her screentime wasn’t enormous but I was lucky she got talked about a lot, though in some quite extreme ways.”

Fans have been repeatedly calling for The Inbetweeners – which was nominated for a best sitcom in 2009 BAFTA and spawned two films in 2011 and 2014 – to come back in some way, but the cast isn’t keen on making a grown-up series.

Buckley, who played cocky loudmouth Jay, said earlier this year: “It’s a hard no, I’m afraid. It just wouldn’t be the show people want or remember.”

The actor, who was speaking to Chris Moyles on Radio X when he made the revelation, started by assuring listeners that playing Jay was the “best job in the world” but explained that, should series co-creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, approach the quartet for a return, he wouldn’t be interested.

“I don’t want to go near it anymore, not because I don’t think I would have an amazing time doing it, because I know I would,” he told the presenter, as per Yahoo Movies.

“I love the boys, I love the writers. Doing The Inbetweeners was the best job in the world.

“All we did was muck around all day long and they filmed us doing it, and, at the end of the day, we might have had an episode… or a film or something.

“But it might – you know, as I’m getting older – it’s looking like it might be the only thing that I do professionally that is universally loved.

“There’s not enough money in the world for me to spoil that.”
