No wonder they’re in financial disarray

The details of Ousmane Dembélé’s new contract at Barcelona have been revealed and the Frenchman is earning a monstrous amount.

Dembélé signed a two-year deal in the summer, putting an end to months of speculation after the winger initially refused to commit to new terms.

According to Spanish publication Sport, Dembélé will earn as much as £17m-a-year – £13.5m each year for the contract and £3.4m in bonuses – across the two years.

The 25-year-old will also be entitled to 50 per cent of any transfer fee should Barça sell him with the winger’s release clause reportedly set at £42m.

This could give the forward an incentive to leave the club knowing that he would get an extra £21m on top of his salary if he leaves the Camp Nou.

Any departure would also see Barça make a significant loss on the £120m they paid to sign the Frenchman from Borussia Dortmund in 2017.

Barcelona are in desperate need of cash

Barcelona are in desperate need to sell players in order to register their new signings. Andreas Christensen, Franck Kessié, Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Jules Koundé have all joined the club but due to LaLiga rules, are unable to register them.

In order to balance the books and restore *some* financial respect to their name, Barça are selling some of their rights, including 25 per cent of their television rights.

Players are also being criticised for refusing to take a pay cut. Both Martin Braithwaite and Frenkie de Jong have felt the wrath of fans with Braithwaite being booed inside the stadium while De Jong was criticised when arriving for training.
