‘I will not be showing private messages, but he basically called me a donkey’

Jamie Carragher has said that Lionel Messi sent him a direct message on Instagram earlier this season and called him a ‘donkey.’

The Argentine forward did not appreciate Carragher’s comments about his move to Paris Saint-Germain from Barcelona, the Sky Sports pundit has said.

The former Liverpool defender said on Monday Night Football that he did not believe that Messi was a great signing for PSG. On the show, he also questioned Manchester United’s decision to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi was watching the show, or word got back to him about Carragher’s comments. The former England defender has said that Messi sent him a DM and called him a ‘donkey’ earlier this season.

“We had that debate at the start of the season about Ronaldo or Messi, I was a Messi man,” Carragher said on Friday Night Football on Sky Sports.

“He’s not happy with me at all. I had a little pop at Ronaldo earlier in the season when I said I didn’t think it was a great signing for United.

“I used the example of Messi, I didn’t think Messi was a great signing for PSG. It was on Monday Night Football.

“I got a private message on Instagram from the man himself. I will not be showing private messages, but he basically called me a donkey.”

Carragher spoke about Messi as he was selecting his team of the year. The former Liverpool defender opted for Mohamed Salah ahead of Messi in the team but he said that he still believes that Messi is the best footballer of all time.

“He watches Monday Night Football, and hopefully he is watching Friday Night Football as well, because Lionel, I absolutely love you, you’re the greatest player of all time. And compared to you I was a donkey. I accept that.

“But you’re not getting in this team. You haven’t played well enough, even if you won the Copa America in the summer. It’s not enough to leave my man Mo Salah out of the team.”
