The renovation saw five properties turned into one
Renovations to the home of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have ended up costing taxpayers more than £2 million.
Frogmore Cottage in Windsor was renovated from five separate properties into one single property, at a cost of £2.4m, according to royal accounts.
“The works started on-site in November 2018 and were substantially completed by the end of March 2019,” the Sovereign Grant accounts said.
The couple moved from Kensington Palace to the cottage in April prior to the birth of their son, Archie.
The renovations, while incredibly expensive, were cheaper than those carried out at the Kensington Palace home of Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton, in 2013, which came in at £3.4m.
The Sovereign Grant accounts show that the Queen’s expenses increased 41 percent year-on-year in 2018, to £67m.
Royal expenses have increasingly become a point of contention among the public in recent years, with many individuals and groups stating that the money would be better spent on services for the public.
The £2.4m spent on the renovations – if spent elsewhere – could have paid 100 nurses the average annual pay for a year.
