Jenny Chapman immediately said she had provided more detail ‘than she intended to’

Labour’s shadow Brexit minister Jenny Chapman said the party will submit a motion of no confidence in Theresa May’s government before Christmas.

The MP said afterwards she had “got a bit carried away” and revealed more detail than she intended.

Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s first minister, said yesterday the SNP would support Labour if it tabled a motion, provided they then pursued a second Brexit referendum afterward.

Speaking to Eddie Mair on LBC, Chapman said a no confidence motion is “going to happen.”

“The vote of confidence will probably come before Santa does if I can put it that way”

“I’ve probably gone further there than I was intending to.”

After the interview Chapman said: “Might have got a bit carried away trying to make a joke about Christmas! Labour is prepared to bring a no confidence vote and will do so at the best opportunity to topple this rotten Government.”

Yesterday leader of the SNP Nicola Sturgeon said her party would support Labour if it tabled the motion.

She said: “If Labour lodges a motion of no confidence in this incompetent government tomorrow the SNP support and we can work together to give people the chance to stop Brexit in another vote. This shambles can’t go on – so how about it?”
