Kane, who spent the bulk of the season playing as a lone striker for Tottenham Hotspur, outscored every other striker in the Premier League and was tipped by club team-mate Ryan Mason to win the Euro 2016 Golden Boot.
However he failed to force a save against Russia, and was - perhaps surprisingly - put on corner duty.
Sturridge scored 13 goals in 25 games for Liverpool in the 2015/16 campaign, and has not found the net for England since the 2014 World Cup defeat to Italy, though he has missed a number of games through injury.
He was not the only England forward to stay on the bench throughout the opening game, with both Jamie Vardy and Marcus Rashford waiting to make their respective tournament debuts.
