The arrival of Steve McClaren was meant to herald a new, John Carver-less dawn at St James' Park, but things haven't gone to plan.

Newcastle are without a Premier League win under the former England manager, and are now out of the League Cup after losing at home to Championship Sheffield Wednesday, who were themselves resting a number of first-choice players.
