Memphis Depay has made an unrealistic promise to Manchester United fans

Aim lower, Memphis

Aim lower, Memphis.

Memphis Depay has told Manchester United fans he’ll be back to his best next season. The Dutch winger has been reflecting on his disappointing debut campaign in the Premier League.

Depay joined United from PSV for £25m last summer, and arrived with a big reputation after his exploits in the Dutch league. However, he lost his place in the first team mid way through the season, after a series of lacklustre performances, and didn’t even make the bench for the FA Cup final.

In an interview with Fox Sports, Memphis conceded his season had been underwhelming and he plans to work hard to impress new United manager Jose Mourinho.

He also made a promise that he may find very difficult to fulfil, saying: “The old Memphis, who beat every opponent, will soon be back again.”

Whether the ‘old’ Memphis, and by that we mean the young Memphis, can beat every opponent next season seems unlikely. He’ll certainly need to stop being dispossessed on average 2.4 times per game, as he was last season.Manchester United v A.F.C. “It’s never nice to be criticised, but it’s part of the game and I have to deal with it. The season did not go as planned and that hurt my confidence a bit.”

“I do not want to blame the manager for it. I played some good games and some bad matches. I do not want to blame anyone for it. I have not been in touch with Van Gaal yet. I might give him a call or send him a text.”
