Keylor Navas: “I sobbed at the airport when Man United move fell through”

Real Madrid's Keylor Navas has opened up about his tumultuous transfer deadline day - and how it all got too much for him.

Navas, who remains Real Madrid's goalkeeper by default, was treated extremely shoddily on the final day of the transfer window. He was a sideshow; a makeweight for David de Gea's move to the Bernabeu. Despite this, there was the carrot of joining Manchester United, where he would be the guaranteed number one - it was even stipulated in the agreed contract between player and club. It would also mean no more uncertainly as to his medium-term future. No more constant rumours about who would ultimately take his spot. As we all know, the deal didn't end up going through. Due to an administrative cock-up, De Gea remained in Manchester, whilst Navas stayed in Madrid. But as Costa Rican confesses, sitting in the airport, realising that he was going nowhere as all deals were off, he broke down:

"This was one of the worst days of my life. I didn’t cry that day, but I did after all was said and done, when I was with my wife. "I was waiting in the airport even without suitcases. I was not on the plane, but I was near. In the end, after everything that happened, many complicated moments, we’re human and eventually the time comes when you burst."

Poor fella. The silver lining of course is that he's been in fine form as Real's number one, although for how long he is afforded that security is anybody's guess.
