Jose Mourinho was in the stands as Andy Carolll scored the late winner and the Blues are now just three places above the relegation zone.
By all accounts, West Ham were full value for their win as they added the scalp of Chelsea to the heads of Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City to their trophy cabinet already this season.
The Chelsea website disagreed. They described the loss as coming in 'cruel circumstances' and that was only the start.
