Star Wars: The Force Awakens is now officially the biggest movie in US history

Star Wars is back with full force, stronger than ever in fact.

Just 20 days after its release in US cinemas, 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' overtook 'Avatar' to become the highest grossing movie in American history. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the seventh episode of the Star Wars franchise surpassed $769.5 million (£526.2 million) in domestic box-office sales - the record previously held my James Cameron's 2009 epic. The Force Awakens still has a long way to go to beat Avatar's worldwide record of $2.78 billion (£1.9 billion). It currently boasts a global tally of $1.56 billion (£1.07 billion) - but is yet to open in the lucrative Chinese market.
