Jimmy Kimmel's monologues are famously witty and lighthearted, but he choked up when discussing Cecil the Lion.
The popular chat show host was explaining the cruel murder of the endangered beast by Walter Palmer, a Minnesota dentist and hunting enthusiast, who had paid $55,000 to hunt, track and kill the African lion.
Kimmel went into stark detail about how and why Palmer did what he did, and although he warned against vigilante attacks on the dentist, he could barely suppress his anger and dismay at the needless killing.
Although peppered with a few gags, the monologue is largely serious. Kimmel was visibly moved and was close to tears at one point when plugging wildcru.org, the Oxford-based conservation research unit.
